The “Supersonic” granny stripe hat

First things first! I created a crochet bucket hat based on granny stripes. Nothing more, nothing less.

The pattern is available HERE ON RAVELRY for 3€. It comes in different sizes from kids size to adult in US terms, UK terms, German, Dutch, Spanish and Swedish.

Big, Big thank you to all translators, testers and helping hands!

I started the process for this 4 summers ago but always thought it is not good enough. I tried to make it as much “90s bucket hat” as possible but somehow I never really succeeded. It is not a pattern i heavily worked on, but every time the weather got warmer and the sun came out I remembered the hat and tried to make a new one.

One of the first versions of the hat made 4 years ago.

Now after 4 years, I think, I found a way that makes the hat look retro modern with a good stability (which I think is essential for hats) without loosing the classic granny stripe look.

The “Boys of Summer” hat became the “Supersonic” hat

Most of you people know that I often name my patterns by songs I like. In this case the hat got its name long before the pattern was finished. This hat has always been the “Boys of Summer” hat. I always had the original song and the faster cover version by the Ataris in my head when I was making different versions of this hat. But somehow, when the pattern was finally finished and thoughts about a release came closer, the name did not sound right anymore. Even if the song is not specifically about “boys”, the name would in some way indicate, that it is a “boys” hat. And that is definitely not the case. I deeply believe that colors, clothes and accessoires along with many other things do not belong to any gender. This hat is truly unisex… in most cases unisexy!

If you have a head, you can and should wear one. Also to protect yourself from the sun and not only to look good! So it got the name SUPERSONIC as it is the 30th anniversary of the Oasis debut album “Definitely Maybe” and nobody looks better in a bucket hat than Liam Gallagher.

Cahlista, 3,5mm, yarn under, version

The hat is adaptable in size by combining different kind of yarns, different hook sizes and a slightly different technique. The stitch count is not changing. To be honest, it is quite difficult to find the perfect size as gauge and stretch may vary a lot. Maybe it is just me who is extremely meticulous with my hats but I think one inch or centimeter bigger or smaller does make a difference in appearance and style.

Catona 3,5mm, Yarn under, Version

I think I still find a way to cover most sizes and if the hat turns out to be to big or to small, I hope there is someone around you who has a fitting head who wants to have your make as a present and then you can go up or down a size and test your way through.

Crown, work in progress

The hat is also changing a lot in appearance depending on the color setting. So there are a lot of possibilities to find your very own personal style. It is a a good pattern to work from stash or use your scrap yarn and leftover yarn.

If you decide to buy new yarn, Scheepjes Yarn can be bought at your local yarn shop: Scheepjes Dealers . If you do not have the possibility to buy local, you can order your Scheepjes yarn at Wool Warehouse or Jimmy Beans Wool

  1. Dear Martin,

I’ve been following your posts for a long time already. I love your handwork and adore your photographs.

I’m an Israeli woman, with some short experience of the Nordic countries, as I spent one year in a Folkehoegskole in Norway and a summer camp in Finland (1980-81) and later on worked at the Israeli Embassy in Oslo (1983-83). I managed to study Norwegian and I still keep in touch with some of my Scandinavian friends.

Now, to my point about the granny stripe hat you designed. I love the shape of it. I do not like the colorful version. As it gets hot in Israel I’m interested in making such a hat from Cotton yarn. I’ll choose a main color and then maybe decorate it with a rim of a different color.

What Cotton yarn would you recommend? Are there any different instructions for crocheting this hat with Cotton?

    Best regards,

    Nili Goldstein
