“Landscapes” Scheepjes Tunisian Crochet Make-A-Long – Announcement

Great, great, great news.

THE IDEA

All involved parts worked really hard on this and finally the day is here to spread the news that I have the honor and privilege to host a SCHEEPJES Make -A- Long again. I am very excited and happy.

After the wonderful community experience of the “Get Connected” MAL in 2021, I would like to apply the same values and attitude on the forthcoming MAL. WE DO THIS TOGETHER!

This MAL is going to be themed to bring our lovely crafting community together as you create your own unique triangle shawl in colorways representing the environment you live in or inspired by your favorite landscape around the world. Of course this is optional and you can choose whatever colorway you like.

This time we are going to use the Tunisian crochet technique which is not as common and not as often used as the mosaic technique which was used it in my first MAL with Scheepjes. We are going to work corner – to – corner and create small rectangles in different sizes. You work with one color in every row and you do not have to join parts as the rows are crocheted onto each other. The technique is even called Entrelac. In that way we are going to create a triangle shawl that is finished with a heavier double border to keep it in good shape.

My very own version is inspired by the land of long winters and weak WIFI connection – The beautiful Swedish landscape Jämtland.

MATERIALS

My children helped me to pick 11 different shades of the Scheepjes Scrumptious range which all represent different parts of the landscape we live in:

  • Yarn A: Red Velvet Cake /359 – the typical red houses of Sweden
  • Yarn B: Buttercream Icing / 302 – the snow
  • Yarn C: Pistachio Mafroukeh / 344 – the dark, old woods
  • Yarn D: Baklava / 325 – the lighter woods
  • Yarn E: Key Lime Pie / 337 – the meadows
  • Yarn F: Raspberry Rock Candy / 335 – the smaller lakes
  • Yarn G: Coconut Spirulina Cheesecake / 342 the big, deep lake of Jämtland
  • Yarn H: Blue Surf Cake / 305 the night sky
  • Yarn I: Cosmic Cup Cake / 366 – the winter sky before the norther lights appear
  • Yarn J: Cinnamon Peach Cobbler / 323 – the winter sun
  • Yarn K: Citrus Rice Pudding / 315 – the summer sun

For the border we chose two more shades in green and blue:

  • Yarn L: Matcha Chiffon Cake /326
  • Yarn M: Blueberry Basil Galette / 374

You will need one ball per color.

The Scheepjes Scrumptious yarn is made of 50% Recycled Polyester (recycled plastic bottles) and 50% Acrylic, the weight is 300 meters per 100 grams.

We included a general Tunisian tutorial to the MAL so that those of us who are new to Tunisian Crochet have the possibility to participate. I also think, that that is the most fun part and meaning of it: to learn and develop new skills.

To crochet this pattern you will NOT need a special Tunisian crochet hook. A very normal, not too short crochet hook will totally do the magic. We do use a bigger size than normal when we work in this technique. I used a 5.50 mm hook (5.00 mm and 4,50 for the border) working in the Scrumptious yarn and the measurements for the finished triangle are 195 cm on the long side and 135 cm on the shorter sides.

I liked this pattern so much that I also did a version in the luxury Scheepjes Metropolis yarn with a 5.00 mm hook (4.50mm and 4.00mm in the border). The triangle is a little smaller but still big enough to use it as a shawl. (160 cm long side, 120 cm short sides)

The Metropolis Version uses 10 colours in the pattern and 1 colour in the border:

Differences in the color scheme are row 3 (yarn B used) and 22, 24 where the Scrumptious version uses an 11th color.

  • Yarn A: Hamburg : Rows:1, 5, 41, 43, 45.
  • Yarn B: Istanbul: Rows: 2, 3, 4, 42, 44.
  • Yarn C: Rabat: Rows: 6, 7, 8, 38, 39, 40.
  • Yarn D: Alexandria: Rows: 9, 10, 11, 35, 36, 37.
  • Yarn E: Izmir: Rows: 12, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34.
  • Yarn F: Dehli: Rows: 15, 16, 30, 31.
  • Yarn G: Miami: Rows.17, 18, 28, 39.
  • Yarn H: Krakow: Rows 19, 20, 26, 27.
  • Yarn I:  Seoul: Rows: 21, 22, 24, 25.
  • Yarn J: Lyon: Rows:23

Double Border:

  • Yarn K:  Munich 1 ball. (48! grams used)

You will be good with one ball per color in Metropolis too, but in the border it gets very, very close to using the whole ball. Its basically a 50 gram game of yarn chicken 🙂

Buy your yarn at the local yarn shop: Scheepjes Dealers . If you do not have the possibility to buy local, you can order your Scheepjes yarn at Wool Warehouse or Jimmy Beans Wool

COLORS

The color setting of the pattern will change the look of the shawl. So feel free to experiment and use as many colors as you want. I do recommend to not use too many single rows because you will loose the wavy feeling a little. I prefer to have some kind of symmetry from the middle row but even that is a personal preference. I still do think that the very middle row should not be in a strong contrast to the rows besides it. The middle row has small squares and might not look too clean when you choose to place it beside very strong contrast.

Otherwise you should feel very free to go totally wild in your very own color setting. I added an empty chart to the pattern so you can grab your crayons and test and color as you wish.

I worked and experimented quite a lot in the last few years in Tunisian crochet but never released a pattern, so this is very exciting, but also a little frightening, as the pattern is written slightly different to usual crochet patterns. I still hope that we found a way to explain every detail you need.

The MAL is mainly taking place in the official Scheepjes facebook groups:

  1. Love the idea of making my favorite landscape – my home among the West Virginia hills! While I won’t be able to participate during the CAL(due to work schedule) I am looking forward to ooohing & aaahhing over everyone else’s projects and completing my shawl later this summer.

  2. Hi Martin, looking forward to my first MAL. It would be fantastic if you could release the colouring chart early so we have plenty of time to choose our colour scheme.

  3. It’s a really striking pattern, congratulations. I am envisioning continuing on and repeating the pattern in reverse so that you get a square as this would make a stunning wall hanging or lap blanket

  4. Hi Martin, Do we need all the 300 meters of the colors? I would like to make this (mostly) from stash, but my DK skeins usually have 240-250 meters, instead of the 300 of the scrumptious yarn. Awesome shawl btw! Grtz, Mieke

  5. I’m obsessed with this design!!!!! I can’t wait to see everyone’s colorways. Any chance we can get the plain coloring chart early so we can start experimenting with colors?

  6. Such a beautiful design! I bought the pattern on Ravelry, but only received the PDF announcement – will we the actual pattern when the MAL launces?

  7. What a beautifull pattern! Just saw the black and white colouring page. Very tempted to make it in just gray and white and get the MC Escher- vibe. Do you think that would work?
    Have a great day!
